Welcome to Galway Judo Club

Creaven House is situated at the Claddagh Quay in Galway City. It is the home of Judo in Galway and is the only purpose built Judo Club in Ireland.

Facilities

Our facilities include a specially designed sprung floor for safety, changing rooms, showers, sauna, gym facilities and a conference room.

Associate Sports Clubs

Creaven House is also home to a number of other martial arts disciplines including Aikido, Karate, Capoeira and MMA.

Sports Venue For Hire

Creaven House is available for hire. Ideal for Yoga, Meditation and similar sports & recreational activities.

Meet The Coaching Team

John Creaven

John Creaven

2nd Dan

John started Judo in 1967 and is a lifelong member of Galway Judo Club. He has studied Judo at the Budokwai, London and in Holland. He has been chief instructor with GJC for the past 25 years and is a 2nd Dan and NCTC qualified tutor. He has also coached abroad in mainland Europe, was coach to U.C.G. and founded the R.T.C. Judo club. As well as supporting the establishment of other Judo clubs in the West of Ireland, he has been the tournament director of both the Galway Open (since 1975) and the West of Ireland Youth Championships since 2004. Also Director since 1992 of the Galway International Summer School of Judo.

1st Dan

James started judo while he was a student in the ‘Bish’ under John Creaven. While living in Dublin he joined the Kevin Street Judo Club and also became a keen Karate and Aikido practitoner. After returning to Galway he took up judo again with John Creaven and sudied for his 1st Dan. James has been our Junior Judo coach for the past few years. He is also a former chairman of Judo Ireland and likes to play badminton and has run a number of marathons.

1st Dan Senior Coach

Derek coaches the senior classes each week he is a multiple Judo champion who has competed at international level and he has attained level 6 Fetac.

Brian Conway

Brian along with his brother Derek coaches the senior class at the GJC. He trained in France where for went on a Scholarship as part of a cultural exchange set up by Pat Hickey of the OCI. Brian’s Dad Brendan achieved his technical 1st Dan in February 2010.

Mina Ishihara

Mina Ishihara

1st Dan

Mina Ishihara, joined Asahi High School Judo Club, Osaka Japan, in 1991 and was coached by Kazumi Kondo 5th Dan who is graduated from Tenri University. Mina obtained 1st Dan in February 1993.
