Established in 1964, Galway Judo Club is one of the oldest Judo Clubs in Ireland. The club has played a very active role in spreading the sport throughout Galway and the Connacht region and has also achieved huge recognotion at both national and international level with members achiveing great success in competetive sport here at home and abroad.
JOHN CREAVEN (2nd Dan)
John is the chief instructor with the Galway Judo Club, and was for many years, coach to UCG he also founded the RTC Judo Club while he was still a student of science at the college. John studied Judo at the famous Budokwai in 1972 and for his summer holidays he annually went to Papendal in Holland for the famous international summer schools.
He founded the Galway open tournament in 1975, which is still run by him every year since. John hasachieved numerous awards local national and international for services to Judo and is currently coaching the junior classes at Galway judo club as well as the Galway county squad. He also is responsible for coach education with Judo Ireland and oversees the running of numerous competitions, grading and club development.
DEREK CONWAY 1st Dan Senior Coach:
Derek coaches the senior classes each week he is a multiple Judo champion who has competed at international level and he has attained level 6 Fetac.
JOHN MILROY 1st Dan
John coaches under 6 age group – a new class he innovated himself the emphasis is on play, fun, and some judo. It’s the first time we have attempted to involve children this young but thanks to John, it works. John started his Judo in England and continued it when he came home where he achieved his 1st Dan.
BRIAN CONWAY 1st Dan
Brian along with his brother Derek coaches the senior class at the GJC. He trained in France where for went on a Scholarship as part of a cultural exchange set up by Pat Hickey of the OCI. Brian’s Dad Brendan achieved his technical 1st Dan in February 2010.
